Born in Chongqing, China in 1955, Xu Bing originally trained as a printmaker. In 1990, the artist moved to America to escape political pressure and artistic restrictions in China after the Tiananmen Square Protests. He returned to Beijing in 2007 to serve as the Vice President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Xu now works in both Beijing and New York. His current practice focuses on print, sculpture, and installation artworks that often explore language and shared meanings.
